Makalu Base Camp Trek Route

The Makalu Base Camp Trek starts with a flight from the capital to the small grassy airstrip at Tumlingtar. The actual trek commences there as you embark towards Chichile. You will trek through Num, Seduwa, Tashigaon, KhongmaDanda and Mumbuk in the next few days.Passing through these villages, you will have the opportunity to interact with the locals of the region (Sherpa, Gurung and Rai) and gain an understanding of their unique lifestyle and culture.During the second week of the trek, you will notice the scenery changing as your surrounding transforms into a barren alpine landscape. You will ascend further through YangleKharka andNheKharka and finally arrive at Shersong, the lower base camp of Makalu. You’ll take a day off to explore the vicinity, garnering some breathtaking views from the fantastic vantage points on the nearby ridges. The third week of the trek will be the return journey as you retrace your steps through the various settlements all the way to Tumlingtar. The Makalu Base Camp Trek comes to a closure as you catch a flight back to the capital the next morning.

Is the Makalu Base Camp Trek for you?

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is a relatively inaccessible trek compared to the more popular treks in Nepal, which makes it perfect for adventurers looking to get away from the bustle of the crowds. Thanks to the opening of a number of lodges and teahouses recently, this trek is easier than it used to be. However, the trail still tends to be undefined and difficult to tread on at some spots. As such, it is recommended to have some prior trekking experience and decent levels of fitness to perform this trek.
